Nigeria’s Federal Government has unveiled a bold new initiative aimed at training
job creation, and national digital transformation. The nationwide program reflects the government’s
commitment to building a digitally skilled workforce capable of competing in the global digital economy.
Ambitious National Digital Skills Target
The digital skills training initiative forms part of Nigeria’s broader
Digital Transformation Agenda and the
National Digital Economy Policy and Strategy. According to government officials, the
program is designed to accelerate digital literacy and move Nigeria closer to its goal of achieving
95 percent digital literacy by 2030.
As technology continues to reshape industries worldwide, digital skills have become essential for
employment, entrepreneurship, and innovation. This initiative is expected to equip Nigerians with
practical knowledge that supports participation in the modern workforce, remote jobs, and tech-enabled
businesses.
Joint Implementation Committee Established
To ensure effective delivery and coordination, the Federal Government inaugurated a
Joint Implementation Committee (JIC) to oversee the execution of the digital skills
training program. The committee is responsible for planning, monitoring, implementation, and evaluation
of training activities nationwide.
The committee includes representatives from key ministries, agencies, and stakeholders, such as:
- Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy
- Federal Ministry of Education
- Federal Ministry of Youth Development
- National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA)
- Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund)
- Civil society and technology-focused organizations
Through collaboration with public and private sector partners, the committee aims to deliver high-quality
digital education across all regions of the country.
Addressing Youth Unemployment and the Digital Skills Gap
One of the primary objectives of the initiative is to tackle Nigeria’s growing youth unemployment
challenge. By providing access to digital and technology skills, the government seeks to create new
pathways to employment, freelancing, entrepreneurship, and global remote work opportunities.
Participants are expected to receive training in areas such as digital literacy, productivity tools,
online safety, digital entrepreneurship, and other market-relevant digital competencies that enhance
employability.
Supporting Nigeria’s Digital Literacy Goals
The one-million-person training program complements existing digital literacy initiatives led by NITDA
and other agencies. Over the years, the Federal Government has launched multiple programs aimed at
equipping millions of Nigerians with essential digital skills.
These efforts reflect a national strategy focused on building a digitally inclusive society where
citizens can leverage technology for education, business growth, and economic participation.
Certification and Global Opportunities
Beyond training, the initiative emphasizes certification, enabling participants to gain credentials
that are recognized both locally and internationally. Certified digital skills improve job prospects
and open doors to global work opportunities, especially in the fast-growing remote and freelance economy.
Government officials have indicated that some beneficiaries may also gain access to digital tools,
learning platforms, and employment networks that further support career advancement.
Private Sector Partnerships Strengthen the Program
The digital skills initiative is strengthened through partnerships with private sector organizations,
technology companies, and development partners. These collaborations help expand the program’s reach,
improve training quality, and align skills development with industry needs.
By leveraging public-private partnerships, the Federal Government aims to ensure that trainees acquire
practical, in-demand skills that translate into real economic opportunities.
Building a Digitally Empowered Nigeria
As Nigeria continues its journey toward becoming a digitally driven economy, initiatives like the
one-million digital skills training program play a crucial role in shaping the future workforce.
With sustained government support, strong partnerships, and effective implementation, the program is
expected to empower citizens, reduce unemployment, and position Nigeria as a competitive player in the
global digital economy.
